SAP - Systems Applications and Products in Data Processing
SAP is started by five former IBM employees Dietmar Hopp, Hans-Werner Hector, Hasso Plattner, Klaus Tschira, Claus Wellenreutherin 1972. They developed a standard, consistent Enterprise Application Software for ERP. It's the world largest business software company headquartered in Walldorf, Germany. SAP is the one of the Enterprise Softwares which has been in the market for these many years. The inital version of SAP is SAP R/1, SAP R/2, SAP R/3 where R indicates Real time data processing and the number indicates the number of tiers in the architecture. The current version in SAP Business Suite 7 which was released in 2009.

The SAP ERP software includes two types of classification namely Technical and Functional. The technical side includes all the System Landscape design, implementation, monitoring and customization using ABAP(Advanced Business Application Programming which is developed by SAP itself). Functional side includes all the modules widely used by industries. Some of the famous modules are SAP Business Warehouse and Business Objects (BW/BO), SAP Process Integration(PI), SAP Supply Chain Management(SCM), SAP Customer Relationship Management(CRM), SAP Supplier Relationship Management(SRM), SAP Business Intelligence(BI), SAP Financial and Controlling(FICO), SAP Sales and Distribution(SD), SAP Application Life cycle Management(ALM), SAP Product Life cycle Management(PLM) etc.,
Currently there are more than 1 Lakh SAP installations spread over 25 different industries around the world and involving more than 10s of Millions of end users everyday. The first client was Imperial Chemical Industries and SAP helped them by developing software for maintaining payroll and accounting.
