Tiers & it's types

Different type of tiers:

Single tier:
In this type of tier all the three layers (Presentation layer, Application layer, Database layer) are installed in same system. It can be used in very small scale business requirements but it is not at all recommended to install the three layers in same system as it will reduce the performance, can't handle more no. of users, high hardware requirements, etc.,

Two tier:
In this type of tier two layers ( Application layer & Database layer) will be installed in one system and the Presentation layer will be installed in other system(usually end user's computer or laptop). This can be suitable for small and medium scale industries where the no. of end users are in optimal count.


Three tier:
All the three layers will be installed on different systems i.e. Database layer in separate system, Application layer in another system and Presentation layer in end user's computer or laptop. This kind of architecture will deliver excellent performance both in software and hardware vise. It can accommodate high number of users and will be more consistent. This type of architecture is recommended by SAP.

SAP Netweaver Technology - Brief Introduction

SAP Netweaver Technology 7.0 & SAP Business Suite 7 Overview:

The latest version of SAP's ERP is Business Suite 7 which was released on May 5, 2009. It contains ERP 6.0 with EhP4 (Enhancement Package 4), CRM 7.0, SCM 7.0, PLM 7.0, SRM 7.0 and running on SAP Netweaver 7.0 Technology. The Netweaver Application server can be implemented by using either ABAP or Java or both(Dual stack) which depends on the usage and Customer requirements. The types of Netweaver AS (Application Server) are discussed below.

Single Stack system:
The single stack system is a SAP system with either Netweaver Application Server ABAP or Netweaver Application Sever Java as base unit on which the other SAP modules and supporting third party tools will function. Eg.: A portal running on NW AS Java unit.



Dual Stack system:
In dual stack system both SAP NW AS ABAP and NW AS Java will be used as base units which helps other modules to run on it. The classic example of dual stack system is SAP Process Integration(PI).



Separated Stack system:
Separated stack system is slightly different from dual stack, in which the both Application Severs will be used but in separated systems i.e. the ABAP based modules and tools will run in NW AS ABAP server and Java based modules and tools will run in NW AS Java Server. To put in simple words, both servers will be used but in different systems. After the release of SAP BS 7.0, this type of stack is recommended by SAP

Eg.: Business Integration Scenario - BI ABAP based modules in BI NW AS ABAP server and BI Java based modules in BI NW AS Java server

SAP - Introduction

SAP - Systems Applications and Products in Data Processing

SAP is started by five former IBM employees Dietmar Hopp, Hans-Werner Hector, Hasso Plattner, Klaus Tschira, Claus Wellenreutherin 1972. They developed a standard, consistent Enterprise Application Software for ERP. It's the world largest business software company headquartered in Walldorf, Germany. SAP is the one of the Enterprise Softwares which  has been in the market for these many years. The inital version of SAP is SAP R/1, SAP R/2, SAP R/3 where R indicates Real time data processing and the number indicates the number of tiers in the architecture. The current version in SAP Business Suite 7 which was released in 2009.

The SAP ERP software includes two types of classification namely Technical and Functional. The technical side includes all the System Landscape design, implementation, monitoring and customization using ABAP(Advanced Business Application Programming which is developed by SAP itself). Functional side includes all the modules widely used by industries. Some of the famous modules are SAP Business Warehouse and Business Objects (BW/BO), SAP Process Integration(PI), SAP Supply Chain Management(SCM), SAP Customer Relationship Management(CRM), SAP Supplier Relationship Management(SRM), SAP Business Intelligence(BI), SAP Financial and Controlling(FICO), SAP Sales and Distribution(SD), SAP Application Life cycle Management(ALM), SAP Product Life cycle Management(PLM) etc.,


Currently there are more than 1 Lakh SAP installations spread over 25 different industries around the world and involving more than 10s of Millions of end users everyday. The first client was Imperial Chemical Industries and SAP helped them by developing software for maintaining payroll and accounting.
